Classes

Reiki Classes

Reiki is a very relaxing form of bodywork that anyone can learn. You don’t have to be a massage therapist or even know anything about anatomy to learn and benefit from Reiki. It can be a very relaxing technique to use on yourself or on friends and family members, and even pets. There are several levels in Reiki training, each taking approximately 8 hours of class time. If you are interested in learning Reiki, please contact me.

Couples Massage Classes

In this 2-hour course, couples will learn simple and easy-to-remember techniques to provide massage for each other. Specific areas of focus will be the hands, feet and the back. You’ll each receive a workbook to take home. Click here to schedule a class for you and your partner. Please contact me if you would like more information.

Links

Here are links related to massage therapy and overall well-being that may be of interest to you. Asterisked links below are links for which I am an affiliate. They will know I sent you and I will be rewarded if you join or purchase from these sources.

Thrive Market*

I cannot say enough wonderful stuff about Thrive Market. It’s like a really healthy Amazon Prime. The savings on products over prices in the stores are amazing. Shipping is quick and the items are well-packaged. I highly recommend checking this site out. Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean more expensively with Thrive Market in your corner.

Gallup Well-Being Index

A survey of people across the country and their perspectives on their health.

Caroline McGraw’s Website

Caroline McGraw is the author of the book You Don’t Owe Anyone: Free Yourself from the Weight of Expectations, and I cannot recommend her book highly enough. At her website, you can download the first chapter of the book for free.

JuicePlus*

JuicePlus is a line of supplements made from whole fruits and vegetables. Medical doctors recommend it because its health claims are backed by lots of scientific research. JuicePlus can be a great tool for times when you can’t get enough healthy foods in your diet, such as when you’re traveling or under time pressure.

Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals

This is the professional massage organization of which I am proud to be a Certified Level member.

Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy

I am licensed to practice massage therapy in Kentucky. This is a link to the Kentucky government’s site about massage therapy licensure, including the code of ethics to be followed by therapists who are licensed, and a page where you may search for and verify my license to practice massage in Kentucky.

Indiana State Board of Massage Therapy

I am certified to practice massage therapy in Indiana. This is a link to the Indiana government’s site about massage therapy certification (through 2017), and licensing (2018 forward), including the law itself, the professional standards certified massage therapists must abide by, and a page where you may search for and verify my certification and licensing.

Advanced Massage Therapeutics

Charles Watson was one of my instructors in massage school at the Louisville School of Massage, in Louisville, Kentucky. He opened his own school in 1998, also in Louisville. For anyone interested in learning to become a massage therapist, I highly recommend his school. He is the massage therapist for the University of Louisville men’s basketball team. Before I moved to Salem, Indiana, I worked with Charles as a therapist at Advanced Massage Therapeutics.

Louisville School of Massage

This is where I studied massage, in Louisville, KY. I graduated in 1998 from the school’s Professional Therapeutic Massage Program. The Louisville School of Massage was the first massage therapy school licensed in the state of Kentucky.

Touch Research Institute

Established in 1992 by Dr. Tiffany Field at the University of Miami School of Medicine, the TRI describes itself as “the first center in the world devoted solely to the study of touch and its application in science and medicine.”

Books and Cookbooks

If you are interested in learning more about massage, bodywork and wellness, you may enjoy the following books. Please note that an asterisk means that the seller will know I sent you and I’ll be credited if you purchase one of these books:

Full Body Presence: Learning to Listen to Your Body’s Wisdom* by Suzanne Scurlock-Durana

I cannot say enough about this book. It does more than any other book I’ve ever read to get you in touch with your body, teaching you how to listen to it. Suzanne Scurlock-Durana does this is a very gentle way. The practices she teaches in the book and the accompanying explorations on CD or downloaded from the Internet can help you establish boundaries, keep calm and centered in the midst of a storm, and increase your confidence. I highly recommend it.

Freedom from Pain: Discover Your Body’s Power to Overcome Physical Pain by Peter A. Levine and Maggie Phillips

This is a wonderful book filled with resources to break free from chronic physical pain. One of the co-authors, Peter Levine, created the body psychotherapy modality Somatic Experiencing. I cannot recommend his work highly enough and this book is written for the layperson, which is nice.

Touching: The Human Significance of the Skin* by Ashley Montagu

This is my favorite book on the importance of touch for a person’s health and development. Written by an anthropologist, it explains through examples from various cultures and results of research studies how touch is our most important sense – for proper development, socialization and general health. I find it a fascinating book.

Acupressure Way of Health: Jin Shin Do* by Iona Marsaa Teeguarden

This is a nice introduction to traditional Chinese medicine and acupressure. Teeguarden explains the meridians and where to find specific acupressure points and how they may be used to correct imbalances in the body.

Job’s Body: A Handbook for Bodywork* by Deane Juhan

As I understand it, some massage therapy schools require their students to read this book, and for good reason. What a wonderful guide to how and why the body responds to massage therapy and bodywork.

Cookbooks

The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet Cookbook* by Mark Hyman M.D.

This is one of my go-to cookbooks. There are lots of great recipes in here and they’re easy to make without crazy ingredients or proprietary products.

Everyday Detox: 100 Easy Recipes to Remove Toxins, Promote Gut Health, and Lose Weight Naturally* by Megan Gilmore

I love the recipes in this book. They avoid foods that some people are sensitive to and the recipes are particularly yummy. Some of my favorite recipes are in this book.

Music

I’m often asked about music that’s best for relaxation. There’s a lot out there, some wonderful and some not so much. As both a bodyworker and musician, I prefer music that’s musically interesting, not so much so that it requires your full attention but not boring either. It should work well in the background and foster relaxation, but not annoy you with repetition or lack of tune or harmony. That can be a tall order! But this music does exist and I’m honored to share with you this list below of my favorite music for relaxation, reflection and healing. An asterisk means I will get credit if you follow the link and purchase the item.

Deuter*

I could not recommend Deuter’s music highly enough (pronounced DOY-ter). Anything by this composer is wonderful and he has over 50 albums to choose from. My personal favorites are the East of the Full Moon, ImmortelleIllumination of the Heart, Land of Enchantment, and Koyasan: Reiki Sound Healing albums, especially the song from the Koyosan album called “Sound of Invisible Waters.”

Music for Sound Healing* by Stephen Halpern

I highly recommend Stephen Halpern’s music in general but this recording in particular. Halpern composes his music specifically to help you relax. It’s effective either as background music or as music to actively listen to. I like to put the CD on repeat and play it for long periods.

After the Rain: The Soft Sounds of Erik Satie*, performed by Pascal Rogé

If you’re a classical music fan, I highly recommend this recording of Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1 through 3, Gnossienne No. 1 through 6 and Nocturne I through V, along with additional pieces. It’s a gorgeous, peaceful recording.

Shamanic Dream* by Anugama

It’s difficult to describe this music but you can listen to a sample on Amazon. It was composed specifically for meditation and consists of two 30-minute-long pieces. According to Alternative Medicine Digest, “the musician combined sounds and melodies known to correspond with certain human brain waves and energies of the Earth itself, as established by modern geophysics.”

Music for Zen Meditation and Other Joys* by Tony Scott

This is a really unusual recording due to the combination of instruments that come together to make music. Tony Scott plays the clarinet and he’s joined by Shinichi Yuize on the koto and Hozan Yamamoto on the shakahachi. It is by far the oldest recording in my relaxing music collection. It was recorded in 1965.
