There are situations when we get pulled off our center, when something in our environment takes us out of balance. I’m most prone to this when I’m driving my car. I’ll be driving along, relaxed and happy, and then some other driver will do something life-threatening or even just rude. And suddenly I’m not so relaxed and happy anymore. Now I’m angry, and cursing, and calling the other driver names and giving them dirty looks.

I don’t like what this has done to my mood, behavior or stress level, which has just shot through the roof. What can I do to avoid getting worked up like this? I have a long way to go, but here are some ideas that have helped me in these situations:

  • I remember that just because this other driver did something rude or stupid doesn’t mean the person is by nature rude or stupid or that they always drive like this.

  • I think of reasons I’d consider their behavior reasonable. For example, maybe they’re on their way to comfort a loved one, and so worried they aren’t even aware of what they just did.

  • I look at the other person’s face. If I see them as a car, it’s easy for me to depersonalize them and get angry. If I see their face, it’s easier for me to imagine myself in their shoes.

  • I remind myself that this other person is not out to get me personally.

What are some other strategies you use to stay calm and centered while driving?
